Chronic Pain Sufferers Find Relief in CBD

Those who have experienced chronic pain from an injury or illness know that it can be a life-altering experience. No one situation is the same, ranging from a pesky injury that reminds us of its presence from time to time, to being unable to work and live a normal life. The path of chronic pain can be long and winding, with answers and solutions sometimes miles apart.

Invariably, pain management becomes a priority for chronic pain patients and healthcare professionals. This usually involves other-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals that often have side effects and may create a risk for dependency.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is increasingly providing chronic pain sufferers with an alternative to these pharmaceutical pain drugs. CBD is the second most common cannabinoid by volume in the cannabis plant. The compound has many natural analgesic properties and does not produce the powerful psychoactive high that THC is known for.

How CBD Relieves Pain

Of course, any chronic pain patient curious about trying CBD will want to know how it works, or if they’re just on another wild goose chase for a bit of relief. CBD actually works toward the same goal as many pain drugs – to reduce inflammation. The main difference is the receptors it targets to achieve this.

Opioid drugs reduce pain by binding to your opioid receptors, while NSAIDs block the effects of enzymes that cause inflammation. CBD is a cannabinoid that acts on the body’s endocannabinoid receptors, which send signals to regulate mood, energy, appetite, pain response, and many other important functions. When CBD interacts with these receptors, it can limit inflammation and prevent the absorption of anandamide, a compound responsible for regulating pain.

The European Journal of Pain published a study that showed CBD’s positive response to inflammation when applied topically to rats with arthritis. The study found that after a CBD gel was applied for four consecutive days, there was a dramatic decrease in joint swelling. Researchers observed no negative side effects during the study.

And that’s the great thing about CBD. Pain patients do not need to worry about getting hooked on it as they would with opioids, or running the risk of liver or kidney damage as they would with many traditional NSAIDs.

The Right Products for Chronic Pain

If you’re looking to try CBD for the first time, well, you’re in luck! CBD products have been soaring in popularity over the last couple of years, resulting in an abundant supply and many different options for consumption. CBD Supermarket has its own wide selection of products, including pure CBD distillate, oil tinctures, capsules, chocolates, creams, and e-liquids.

When it comes to chronic pain, a good place to start is with products that can be applied topically. CBD has a greater bioavailability when applied to the skin, meaning your body will use it more efficiently for treating pain in that area than if you consumed it orally. Just apply your product of choice wherever you have pain, massage gently, and you should experience some much-needed relief.
